In June, 2001, my wife Amy and I made a whirl-wind trip to Colorado to hike a
couple more 14ers and recon some sites for future trips.
We decided to drive straight through to the Gray's Peak trail head in Steven's
gulch at about 11,300 ft. Our home town in Iowa sits at about 900' above msl.
The 10,400' of elevation gain over 14 hours had some adverse effects on Amy and
we about aborted the hike to find a more agreeable altitude. She decided to
recline in the truck and await my return. She's a damn good woman!
These two peaks are straight-forward walk-ups on well defined trails with about
3600 ft. of elevation gain. It took about 6 hours round trip including photos
and
conversing. There's primative camping at the trailhead.

Gray's Peak is on the left and Torrey's is to the right. The clear sky is very
deceiving. About a half hour before getting back to the truck it began to rain.
We decided to waste no time in getting down to I-70 ahead of any wash-outs on
the road in. Just after getting to I-70 enroute to the hot springs in Glenwood,
a mud slide closed one direction of traffic near Georgetown.
