The Cedar River flow was around 25,000 cfs. Snag Creek was out of its banks and
up to the main gate in Black Hawk Park - which was closed.
As we were unloading the boats the Park Ranger came down and doing his job
tried to talk us out of putting in...at least here. In the mid 80's a brother &
sister were swept off the road. The brother managed to push his sister into the
trees. She survived, he drowned. The family donated money to put up a chain
link fence at the park entrance to prevent others from being hurt. (I know the
story well as I was one of the divers searching for the boy). We would have put
in elsewhere had he not changed his mind. He had a job to do and we would have
honored his request. We paddled from the park to where it exits below the dam
in Cedar Falls. We took a couple side trips over normally private land and into
Big Woods Lake.
Iowa's version of a cypress swamp. There was no slack water anywhere. You had
to deftly paddle to get to where you wanted. Strainers of all kinds patiently
waited for a lazy paddler. My boat needs a tetanus shot due to the barbed wire
scratches.
