Enchanted Rock, TX

Enchanted Rock Bill Sweetman, on the left, and myself in front of Enchanted Rock, ca 1977. We were on our second pitch and had to abandon the climb when the rock became too hot to touch. On our way down we encountered a group stranded at the top of a slab. Their leader, a co-worker at their office, had talked them into a climb. They were either too scared or plain distrusted the leader to bring them down. So Bill and I convinced them we could safely belay them to the ground. We camped at Lady Bird Johnson State Park that night. Upon awakening the next morning I pounded my tennies on the ground to shake out any critters. A tarantula managed to keep his footing in the toe of my shoe and proceeded to bite me on my big toe. Bill thought it was pretty funny until I chucked it into his sleeping bag with him.
