Blue Hole - Santa Rosa, NM
Back to the Scuba Page
The Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, NM is an excellent choice for a dive destination. Its cyrstal clear water, high altitude/deep dive challenges and colorful locals far offset any lack of aquatic life. Divers must register at the police station. Perch Lake located nearby contains a twin engine plane for a little wreck diving. There's a dive shop on site. If you decide to dive Perch, do it first then go dive the Blue Hole to flush the sulfurous odor from your equipment. Plan your dive for Wednesday and Thursday when the water should be at its maximum clarity (barring heavy rain or rock slides in the deep non-accessible passages). Weekends see a flurry of activity which clouds the water. There are two staging platforms, one at approx 20 ft. and one at approx 30 ft. As of June '99 these were anchored over the deeper sections. Do not underestimate this seemingly easy dive. A woman recently suffered a serious case of the bends and had to endure two weeks of treatment in Albuquerque's hyperbaric chamber.
